The Stone - Series 4

A Bushido Campaign by David Holden

Introduction

The Stone is a long campaign adventure for the Bushido role-playing game, published by Fantasy Games Unlimited in 1981 (second edition) and now back in print. Series 4 of this campaign continues from where the third series left off, just after the successful war in Hyuga. The Trouble-shooters return to Matsuyama to sort things out before the next phase of Lord Chozo's campaign.

Campaign Summary

The first section concerns adventures in Matsuyama in the immediate aftermath of the Hyugan War.

Episode 1. The Contest. Series 1 is introduced. The trouble-shooters of Sanuki province ride into town for a contest to see who's the best. The rest of the action takes place in interludes.

Interlude A. Guard Duty. Komako is asked to chaperone and guard Lord Chozo's daughter in her social engagements.

Interlude B. Police Brutality. Sugiyama takes out some local trouble-makers and uncovers a plot against the Trouble-shooters.

Interlude C. Power of the Press. Mariko takes over a news sheet to counter the campaigning by a troupe of sumotori who entertain crowds and make political speeches. Emiko helps spread the word.

Interlude D. Street Fighter. Komako infiltrates the Sumotori as a judo entertainer.

Interlude E. (C)rook Takes Queen. Yakuza kidnap Kimori's wife and plan to kill the Trouble-shooters when they come to the rescue.

Interlude F. All the Daimyo's Men. Hyugan exiles funded by the Campaign to Reinstate the Daimyo organise political rallies and break into the house of Lord Chozo's chief strategist, Minato.

Episode 2. Big Trouble in Little Chiba. A plot to kill the Trouble-shooters needs a pre-emptive strike.

Episode 3. Seven Bribes for Seven Buddhas. In order to appease the Emperor, Lord Chozo plans to collect and send the legendary Seven Buddhas statues, but they have to be stolen or obtained by bribing their temple guards.

The second section concerns Lord Chozo's attempts to gain legitimacy as Daimyo of Iyo. Having failed to convince the Shogun, Lord Chozo must petition the Emperor, the only person with more power.

Episode 4. Some Funny Things Happen on the Way to Kyoto. The Trouble-shooters form a diplomatic mission to see the Emperor and get recognition for Lord Chozo. They have various encounters while travelling.

Sideline XXII. The Psi Den Adventure. Crossing the sea, a freak wave capsizes the boat, and it quickly sinks, taking all with it to an underwater cave inhabited by evil nushi who know mind spells.

Sideline XX. The Red Cave. Den of o-bakemono who worship a jikininki

Sideline XXV. The Dragons' Lair. Simple mission to kill a dragon - but it turns out there is more than one.

Sideline XXIII. Throne of Budo. D&D-style dungeon/cave/building filled with traps (budo to disarm) and ninja.

Sideline XIX. Road House. Two Mujina have set up a roadhouse. Rumour has it that "Madness stalks the halls".

Episode 5. The Colour Purple. The Trouble-shooters finally get to meet the ex-Emperor.

Episode 6. The War. After the death of the Emperor, the Shogun sends his army against Lord Chozo. The Trouble-shooters prepare an ambush in the Valley of the Spider.

Interlude G. Valley of the Spider. While preparing an ambush in the Valley of the Spider, the Trouble-shooters find out why it is so named.

Sideline XXVII. A Room With No View. Emiko disappears.

Episode 6. The War. After the death of the Emperor, the Shogun sends his army against Lord Chozo. The Trouble-shooters prepare an ambush in Kumo Valley but are beaten. The retreating armies make their final stand at the Battle of the Stone.

The third section concerns the aftermath of the battle. The Trouble-shooters are scattered and defeated, and must use all their skills to avoid capture and execution.

Interlude H. The Biter Bit. Sugiyama has a mission to kill the enemy commander - but is captured, then almost starved to death before Suganuma comes to his aid.

Interlude I. Able was I... Mariko is captured but released to her husband's custody on promising not to fight. Awaji is placed under interdict.

Interlude J. The Good Samaritan. Emiko is captured but helped to escape by a priest. They run off to live in E. Shikoku.

Interlude K. Lands of Fire and Rice. Sung finds Koei and is left holding the baby.

Interlude L. Back to Square One. Kimori fights with stragglers back to Matsuyama, then escapes to Hyuga with his wife and retires.

Interlude A(2). The Princess and the Poor Person. Komako fights back to Matsuyama then helps Lord Chozo's daughter escape to live with her on a deserted island.
