Kory (Koryandaa Velek) was born on Favela II. This is a small world orbiting a Red Dwarf star on the edge of Hutt Space, about half way between Toydaria and Kothlis. It is given over to mining and industry fed by slave labour and run by Chalabba the Hutt. The world is highly polluted with the feint sun barely visible through the clouds in the thin atmosphere, scarcely adequate to support a sparse scrubland on the surface, making the world dependant on imported food, again controlled by the Hutt; though elements in the Republic support smugglers taking essential supplies of food and medical supplies to the people.
As an attractive girl Kory was noted by elements of the ruling syndicate and was bought by a Toydarian bar owner named Tyra. He employed her first as a waitress and, as she grew up, a dancer and hostess in his bar; which served traders around the nearby spaceport. As such she had contact with many off-worlders and learned about the freedoms enjoyed by the citizens of the Republic. Being an enterprising young woman she began to prepare an escape plan: Freelance theft was overlooked, even encouraged, by the bar management (provided they received a cut of course).
The plan received a boost when a Bothan trader named Tarka began frequenting the bar. He was an undercover Republic Peace Officer trying to close down the slave trade; the planet also relied on slave raiding from Republic and Bothan space to maintain the supply of labour. However the operation had been partially blown by a double agent in the Bothan intelligence ring and Tarka was killed. However Kory was able to use the confusion to skip town on a smugglers transport with her ill gotten gains. Since then she has been making a living as a confidence trickster, thief and entertainer. She often uses the name ‘Canela Torrada.’ Tyra was bankrupted by the disruption to his business which meant he could no longer pay the interest he owned to Chalabba; so all of his property passed to the Hutt. As an escaped- (or stolen as Chalabbla sees it) Hutt slave there is a price on her head of 1000 credits, not enough to excite bounty hunters but enough to encourage opportunists.
Kory is a flamboyant character, glamorous, exotic, vivacious, and enjoys making others uncomfortable. She enjoys her new found freedom and makes extensive use of her wits, charm and, if necessary, speed to get out of trouble. Though essentially amoral her heart is on the side of the angels; she will quite happily fleece someone of their surplus credits but would not drive them into poverty or put their lives at risk. Given her own experience she has a visceral hatred of slavery and oppression. Her desire is to get to the core worlds with their rich pickings and comfortable lifestyles. Her make-up kit is unusual. Lipsticks include hallucinogens, knockout drugs, strength-sapping compounds and paralytics. She is always ready to add to her arsenal.
